An extract derived from the prickly pear, a common cactus that is often used as a food but also as a cosmetic ingredient. Its two main properties are that it soothes and hydrates the skin. There have also been test results in vitro and in vivo showing that it can protect skin cells against UV light. It also may be able to reduce the neurosensory irritation caused by retinoids, AHAs, and some preservatives.
